Western Pacific Drilling Meeting 2022 (WEPAD 2022 hybrid):
Paleoceanography in North Pacific Subtropical Gyre and marginal seas

Background:The WEPAD meeting aimed to have robust discussions about the development of new ocean drilling proposal and/or coring science targets in western Pacific areas, and to construct a close international cooperation for making proposals. Continuing from previous Korea-Japan workshops, this meeting was expanded to include scientists from China and other Asian scientists who are interested in western Pacific drilling or coring. The current IODP (International Ocean Discovery Program) will end in September 2024, but the IODP Forum and others are continuing to discuss subsequent programs. Scientific ocean drilling is entering a major transition period, and Japan has begun to consider continuing international scientific ocean drilling in cooperation with Europe. Paleoenvironmental research is a major theme of ocean drilling, and collaboration with Asian countries is critical to the development of paleoclimate and paleoceanography in the Northwest Pacific and Asia.
Meeting Objectives:
The WEPAD 2022 meeting aims to bring together and discuss the results of recent paleoenvironmental research and related studies in the Northwest Pacific and marginal sea. We welcome any presentations from all fields such as paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, sedimentology, tectonics, geomorphological evolution, and so on. We also welcome to discuss about updated results for several piston cores by two cruises KS-15-4 (Shinsei-maru) and KH-16-6 (Hakuho-maru), and C9037 cores by Chikyu SCORE Exp.913 in the NW Pacific (Shikoku Basin). In addition, we would like to discuss how to promote drilling/coring science on paleoclimate and paleoceanography in the NW Pacific and marginal seas in the Post-IODP era after 2024, and specific proposal ideas.

Field trip:
We will arrange one day field trip in Kochi. The site of field trip is still under construction, but will include Ryugadou Cave (https://ryugadou.or.jp/) and other places.

Visas:
Kochi University will assist you in obtaining an entry visa. The situation in October may have changed, but at this time, new arrivals to Japan must be registered in advance by the institution (Kochi University). You will be issued a pre-registration certificate, which you will use to apply for a visa application in your country. In our case, pre-registration is required by early August at the latest. If you wish to visit Kochi, please contact Minoru Ikehara.
